Entrevista: Bruce Sturgell de Chubstr (Big Boy Fashion)

Yo no creo que la moda tenga que ser para personas de una sola talla. Creo firmemente en que la elegancia no se mide en kilos, sino en las elecciones que se hacen para favorecer al cuerpo. Es un debate que se ha prolongado durante años y en el cual, tristemente, hay mucha intolerancia.

Tampoco creo que la delgadez extrema sea la solución para todo e incluso expreso abiertamente mi desagrado a quien dice "no diseño para gordas", pero con toda esa polémica sobre el peso nos olvidamos de un gran sector allá afuera que quiere verse bien: los hombres.

En muchas marcas, es imposible encontrar algo bueno después de la talla 34, y esto llena de frustración a muchos amigos y conocidos que quieren verse actuales y sufren por usar ropa con un pésimo ajuste o diseños aburridos.

Esta semana, el New York Times perfiló a un sitio web en el que se creaban tips de moda y estilo de vida para el hombre con unos kilitos de más y lo pasé por alto. Posteriormente, The Cut reseñó el texto del NYT y yo seguía sin creer que la idea fuera real, puesto que es un tema que casi nunca se toca, por razones que desconozco.

Hasta que entré a Chubstr.

Lo que me gustó del sitio es que da consejos integrales, incluye looks de sus lectores y personajes famosos y tienen playlists de muy buen gusto. Pero no sólo incluye a chicos con sobrepeso: es quizá el único sitio que da consejos a hombres altos, un grupo que también suele encontrarse con ropa problemática.

Los textos sobre Chubstr llamaron la atención e incluso acaban de poner un tema sobre la mesa: la inexistencia de modelos masculinos de tallas extra.  Así que me uní al interés y le escribí a Bruce Sturgell, fundador del sitio. Aquí tienen la entrevista.

¿Qué te motivó a iniciar Chubstr?

Los hombres con sobrepeso no tienen mucha representación en la moda. Puedes encontrar tiendas para tallas extra y personas altas, pero se dirigen a hombres de más de 40. No hay nada que se enfoque en chicos entre 18 y 40 años que gusten del estilo y quieran usar cosas que realmente les gusten. Soy uno de esos chicos e inicié Chubstr porque me hartó la idea de ver tan pocas opciones para hombres de mi talla.

Todo comenzó como un blog de looks diarios: básicamente una foto de lo que traía puesto. Los lectores comenzaron a hacer preguntas y compartir tips y fue entonces que descubrí que tenía en mis manos algo más que un blog de looks diarios. Así se creó el Chubstr que conoces ahora.

¿Cómo reaccionó la gente?

De una manera tremendamente positiva. Nuestros lectores buscan lo que les ofrecemos y no lo están encontrando en otro lado. Estamos creando una comunidad para gente que no tiene opciones y les estamos ayudando a encontrarlas, así como crear y difundir su estilo personal con los demás.

¿Cómo les ha ayudado el perfil de NYT que se hizo hace unos días?

La difusión de éste y de The Cut nos impulsó de formas que jamás imaginé. Es un gran paso que nos ayudará a hacer cosas que de otro modo nos hubiera tomado mucho tiempo hacer, como sesiones de fotos con chicos con sobrepeso, e incluso estamos pensando en hacer eventos. Hay muchas otras cosas en las que estamos trabajando pero aún no te las puedo contar.

¿Cuál es la principal preocupación del lector amante del estilo?

Cuando tienes a una persona con sobrepeso que está preocupada por su estilo personal, debes tomar ambas cosas en cuenta: buscar ropa con buen ajuste pero que refleje tu estilo. Es difícil tenerlas juntas pero si estás dispuesto a buscar y esforzarte más, usualmente encontrarás lo que quieres.

Dame algunos consejos simples para comprar un traje (y que apliquen para chicos altos)

No compres en un almacén, mándate hacer un traje que te quede perfecto. Habla con tu sastre para que te confeccione algo que te quede bien. Si no tienes un sastre, consigue uno: es muy probable que lo encuentres cerca de donde vives y si no, asómate a sitios como Indochino para trajes hechos a la medida y con estilo.

Ya hemos podido ver algunas tendencias para ropa masculina para este otoño e incluso para la siguiente primavera, tales como la inspiración militar o los años 60. ¿Cuáles recomendarías?

Me encanta lo clásico. Los looks sesenteros son muy simples y discretos sin llegar al aburrimiento. Será divertido hacer un post sobre nuestros favoritos e ir de compras durante las próxima semanas. Me gusta mucho House of Halls y sus pantalones de mezclilla para tallas extra: se enfocan en las tallas 36 a 46, lo cual es genial para cualquier compañía de ropa.

¿Cuál es la tendencia que menos te gusta?

Nunca fui fan de los skinny jeans. Pero por desgracia, me tuve que dar cuenta al comprar un par. Simplemente no me van.

¿Me puedes recomendar algunas marcas para hombres muy altos o con kilos de más? Acá tenemos Gap, Levi's, Ben Sherman, Polo, Saks (aunque es cara para el consumidor promedio), Zara, pronto tendremos H&M y Forever 21, entre muchas otras.

Ésas son muy buenas. A mí me gusta mucho PLNDR.com para ropa casual (tienen hasta la talla 5XL) y Karmaloop. También recomendaría Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer y Orvis, las cuales usualmente tienen una buena selección en tallas extra.

¿Qué le recomendarías al lector mexicano con unos kilos de más? He notado que suele usar ropa muy ajustada o esconderse detrás de prendas demasiado amplias

La clave es encontrar cosas que te queden perfectamente. No usen cosas demasiado amplias ni ajustadas. En el momento en que logren el ajuste correcto, se pueden enfocar en cultivar su estilo.

I always believed that fashion is for everyone. I don’t think elegance can be measured in sizes, rather than smart decisions about dressing our own body. Sadly, not everyone agress and some guy have grown pretty intolerant to big guys and girls.

It’s a very tiresome debate, but there’s one related topic no one seems to talk about: fashion for the big guy. Plus size girls have some option on stylish clothing (like Marina Rinaldi or Lane Bryant) but usually a big guy can’t find stylish clothing. And there are no plus sized male models I can recall.

A few days ago I was surfing the net when a note by The Cut caught my attention. It was about a website with lifestyle and fashion for the chubby guy. I’m talking about Chubstr. I had a Q&A with Bruce Sturgell, founder of the website. I hope you like it.

What made you start Chubstr?

Big guys don't have much representation when it comes to fashion. You've got big and tall stores, who cater to a mid 40's and up audience, but there's really nothing out there that just focuses on guys between 18 and 40 who appreciate style and want to wear things they actually like. I'm one of those guys and I created Chubstr because I got tired of seeing such limited options for men my size.

The whole idea started out as an outfit of the day blog - basically just me posting photos of things I was wearing. Other guys started to ask questions and share tips, and I realized there was something here - something bigger than just a simple outfit of the day site. That's when Chubstr as you see it now was created.

How did people react to the webpage?

People have been overwhelmingly positive about the site. Our readers are looking for what we offer, and they're not finding it elsewhere. We're creating a community here for people who have no other options, and we're helping them find, create, and share their own personal style with the world.

You were profiled in NYT a few days ago, how has that helped so far?

The exposure from the NYT article and The Cut piece has pushed us out there in ways I never expected. It's a huge step that will allow us to do some things that were going to take us a lot longer to be able to do, such as create more custom photo shoots featuring big guys, and even put on events. There are a lot of other things in the works, but I can't talk about them yet.

Which is the main concern in a chubby AND fashion savvy reader?

When you're a person who's bigger and still concerned with style, you have to look at both things. You want your clothes to fit, but you also want them to reflect your style. It's difficult to get both of those things, but if you're willing to search and work a little harder, you can usually find what you want.

Tell me some simple tips when choosing a suit (applying for tall men too)

Don't buy off the rack. Get something custom tailored to fit you. Talk to your tailor and they'll make you something that fits you well while being flattering. If you don't have a tailor, you should get one. There's most certainly one close to wherever you live, and if there isn't, you should take a look at websites like Indochino for really stylish, custom made suits.

We have checked some trends for fall 2012 and even spring 2013 such as the military or 60s influence. Which ones can you recommend so far?

I really dig the classic looks. The 60's influenced looks are simple and mostly understated without being boring. It's going to be fun to report on some of our favorites (and do a little shopping of my own) over the next few weeks. I'm really into House of Halls and what they're doing with denim for bigger guys. They focus on sizes 36 - 46 US, which is amazing for a company doing what they're doing.

Which is your least favourite fashion trend for men?

I was never a fan of the whole skinny jean trend. Sadly, I had to figure that out by buying a pair. It just wasn't my look.

Can you tell me some brands that are great for too tall or chubby men? Here we have the Gap, Levi's, Ben Sherman, Polo, Saks Fifth Avenue (though it's mostly unaffordable for a lot of people), Zara and we'll have H&M and Forever 21 in a few months

Really, the brands you mentioned are great for big and tall sizes. I also like PLNDR.com for sizes to 5XL in streetwear, and their sister site Karmaloop for the same thing. I'd also recommend Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, and Orvis, who seem to have a decent selection on clothing in extended sizes in stock on a regular basis.

What would you advise for the Mexican chubby man? He usually tends to either wear too tight clothing or hide beneath clothing two sizes too big

The key is to get clothing that fits your body correctly. Don't go too baggy, and don't go too tight - once you get the right fit, you can focus on further cultivating your style.
